Critical Incident Response for Peer Support Teams
This POST Certified course is designed to prepare support team members to respond and effectively support the psychological recovery and resilience of public safety personnel after a large-scale critical incident, an active shooter or terrorist event. All public safety employees and peer support members are encouraged to attend.
Topics will include:
– Identifying the ripple effect of a critical incident
– Discuss and define the role of peer support
– Increasing capacity to support after a critical incident
– Understanding acute stress reactions
– How to reduce post-traumatic stress injury (PTSI)
– Increasing skills for crisis counseling
– Discuss the importance of self-care

As the founder of the CSP Crisis Response Team and former Regional Peer Support Coordinator for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Heather has spent the last 18 years responding to critical incidents in partnership with law enforcement. Heather brings her experience and insights to responding to homicides, murder suicides, active shooter events, workplace violence, line of duty deaths and law enforcement suicides. This class will prepare peer support team members to strategically identify the ripple effect of personnel impacted by a major critical incident, provide crisis intervention and ensure that no one is left behind in the recovery of a traumatic event.
