Two-Day Basic Peer Support Training
This course is designed to provide public safety peer support team members the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide support, guidance and resources to their peers during difficult times in their personal and professional lives.
Topics will include:
• Creating a program
• Marketing, buy-in and the cultural shift
• Stress, burnout and traumas of public safety
• Active listening
• Crisis intervention in the aftermath of trauma
• Common mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and PTSD
• Line of duty deaths & public safety suicides
• Organizational stress and toxic personalities
• Substance abuse
• Building resiliency in members of peer support
Dr. Heather Williams, Regional Peer Support Coordinator, Orange County Sheriff’s Department
The class will be presented by Dr. Heather Williams. As the Regional Peer Support Coordinator of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Heather coordinates the OCSD Peer Support Team, responds to critical incidents and facilitates a modified critical incident debriefing model for first responders countywide. Heather is the co-founder of the Orange County Association of Peer Supporters (OCAPS) and has assisted a number of agencies statewide in developing and sustaining peer support programs. Guest speakers may include presentations on: law enforcement cancer support, overcoming depression and suicidal ideation, addiction and substance abuse treatment, surviving addiction and PTSD and officer involved shootings and the community response.

Embassy training seminars are not open to the general public. Embassy seminars are for Law Enforcement personnel or those who, in some capacity, represent law enforcement, public or government agencies. Embassy reserves the right to restrict or deny enrollment or access to any individual.
